A fighter jet pilot’s most valuable bit of kit is his flying helmet. To protect this expensive piece of hardware as they were being carried from base to aircraft, helmet bags were issued to aircrew from around the late 1960s onwards. They featured a large, padded interior compartment, plus pockets to accommodate radio and earphone attachments.
